David,

Many thanks for the information. However, Churchill continued to collect
butterflies long after his childhood. A properly conserved collection can have
a very long shelf life, at least as long as Vladimir Lenin, thanks to various
highly toxic preservatives and a properly maintained storage environment.

See "Churchill: A Life" by Sir Martin Gilbert. Page 67 - Churchill writes to
Jack that his butterfly collection had been destroyed "by the malevolence of a
rat who crawled into the cabinet and destroyed all the specimens". In any case
it is hard to imagine that a collection not professionally preserved would have
survived the passage of 116 years.

  Subject: [ChurchillChat] Whither the Butterflies?

Does anyone happen to know what happened to Winston Churchill's personal
butterfly collection? This little nugget of information is not mentioned in
any of the 2010 press releases about the Chartwell butterfly house. I have
queries out to various museums but no replies yet.

  Thanks.

  Stan
