It is interesting how Singapore still resonates with many people. When I lived in the UK, I met a number of Australians who hate Churchill (even though they were like me born after his death). The reason was usually given in two words -- Dardanelles and Singapore. Many were convinced that Churchill sacrificed the Australian army in both places in an effort to save the British Empire.
I don't believe it of course and note that the British lost many troops in both places. Besides in the case of the Dardanelles, the fiasco was not Churchill's doing but the fault of those in command.
