While special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald
proceeds with his hush-hush investigation of Scooter Libby, a high-level
official with front-door entry into executive decision-making channels,
another equally fascinating inquiry is drawing to a close within the Senate’s
Committee on Indian Affairs, chaired by Senator John McCain. On November 2,
the Committee completed its last of four scheduled hearings into lobbying
activities engaged in by Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon on behalf of an
assortment of Indian tribes. A key witness, Italia Federici, is now the fuse
which may ignite the next scandal involving yet another Bush Administration
cabinet member—Secretary Gale Norton of the Department of
Interior.
