Venezuela to acquire missile-shield from Belarus

By Aleksander Boyd

London 25.08.06 | The Miami Herald reports Freddy Bernal, one of the other chavista mayors of Caracas, announcing from El Salvador that Venezuela will acquire a missile-shield system from Belarus.

The system "will guarantee that no plane or missile will come within 100 kilometres of Venezuela's borders" stated Bernal.

The project is meant to be part of a military agreement between Belarus and Venezuela, according to the mayor.

Venezuela has recently purchased from Russia 100.000 Kalashnikov rifles -15.000 of which have already been delivered- and licenses to produce locally more rifles and ammunition.

Military expenditure during Hugo Chavez's tenure -upwards of $10 billions- dwarfs social programmes, education and health budgets.
