Pedro de la Hoz
THE Pabellón Cuba on Havana's La Rampa boulevard yesterday was filled
with people anxious to buy the first copies of the book Así es Fidel (That's
Fidel), in which writer and journalist Luis Baez has collected more than 400
testimonies of the political and human aspects of the leader of the Revolution.
Speaking about the book, poet and essayist Roberto Fernández Retamar,
member of the Council of State and president of Casa de las Américas, expressed
the immense privilege of having lived in the times of Fidel, whom he described
as "the greatest living statesman," only comparable to Lenin and Ho Chi Minh in
the past century. That perception, he noted, emerges from any reading of the
book published by Editora Abril, in which every testimony linked up by Báez,
offers a multifaceted image of Fidel Castro.
Those present at the launch, which opened the Leer la Historia (Reading
History) event, included Jorge Risquet, member of the Central Committee of the
Communist Party; Julio Martínez, first secretary of the Union of Young
Communists; and Iroel Sánchez, president of the Cuban Book Institute.
