Trucks carrying NIS 175m. cross to Gaza Feb. 6, 2009 JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST Trucks carrying NIS 175 million in cash crossed the border into Gaza on Friday afternoon. The funds were transferred after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed to transfer the sum following a request made by Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salaam Fayad and under US pressure. Both Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni opposed the move. The funds were tax monies collected by Israel on the behalf of the Palestinian Authority. The funds are intended to be used to pay the salaries of municipal employees loyal to Fatah. The Supreme Court rejected a petition by the right wing Legal Forum for the Land of Israel. The forum demanded an injunction to determine whether it was legal to transfer the funds in the knowledge they might end up in the hands of Hamas. Supreme Court Justice Elyakim Rubinstein said he decided not to issue the injunction delaying the trucks from crossing "not without deliberation" that it was indeed necessary.
