INVITATION

Cultural Traffic: Indonesia and the world 1950-65

You
are kindly invited to an open session of a workshop on Cultural Traffic
Indonesia-Abroad 1950-1965 that examines the movement of artists,
writers and ideas between Indonesia and countries abroad over this
vibrant period, including the development of cultural networks and ways
these networks interacted with and influenced cultural expression and
discourse in Indonesia. This workshop is part of an ongoing
collaborative research project on Indonesia’s cultural history
1950-1965.

The report on workshop outcomes will be enlivened
by literature readings by Indonesian and Dutch writers, and a
presentation about Indonesian revolutionary songs of the 1950s and 1960s. To
mark Election Day in Indonesia (April 9, 2009) it will include a discussion
comparing the 1955 and 2009
elections, bringing the past into our present.
