Third Death Near Indonesia Mine

A police officer who had been reported missing Sunday was found dead Monday
near a mine in Papua Province, Indonesia. The mine, part of a gold- and
copper-mining complex called Grasberg, is run by Freeport, the American
conglomerate. The officer was reported missing Sunday after a gunfight in the
hills surrounding the mining complex, the province's police chief told The
Associated Press. His death followed the fatal ambushes over the weekend of a
security guard and an Australian mining expert both working for Freeport in the
same area. It was not clear who was behind the attacks, though Indonesian
authorities blamed Papuan separatists who have been fighting for autonomy for
their province for decades. Thousands of Indonesian troops are stationed in
Papua, which remains the country's most impoverished province despite the
wealth of its resources.
