Jemaah Islamiyah declared terrorist organization, alleged military chief given
15 years

An Indonesian court officially declared the Southeast Asian militant group
Jemaah Islamiyah a
terrorist organization Monday and sentenced its alleged military commander to
15 years behind bars.

Abu Dujana was found guilty of conspiracy to commit terrorist attacks,
harboring fugitives and stockpiling illegal arms. But he has denied playing a
direct role in bombings that have killed
more than 240 people in the predominantly Muslim nation since 2002.

Dujana, whose trial began at the South Jakarta District Court four months ago,
could have been sentenced to death.

But Presiding Judge Wahjono handed down 15 years instead, citing Dujana's
public condemnations of bombings in recent weeks. He also said he was convinced
Dujana could play a role in helping reform other jailed terrorists.

Asked if he would appeal the ruling, Dujana said: "I'll think about it."

Wahjono also officially labeled Jemaah Islamiyah a terrorist organization,
paving the way for it to be officially banned. In the past, the Indonesian
government has said it would be difficult to do so because it was not "a formal
organization."

Jemaah Islamiyah is accused of carrying out the 2002 bombings on Indonesia's
resort island of Bali, a 2003 attack on the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, a
2004 attack on the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, and 2005 triple suicide
bombings on restaurants in Bali. Many of those killed were foreign tourists.

Dujana said he underwent training in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 1989 and
became an instructor in the southern Philippines in the 1990s.(**)
