Saddam's spy receives Kuwaiti citizenship

KUWAIT: Documents recently obtained reveal that an Iraqi resident who worked as 
a spy for the former Iraqi regime was awarded Kuwaiti citizenship, along with 
his family, in recent years. It is believed that the suspect also played a 
large role in assisting Iraqi troops during the 1990 Invasion.

The suspect is believed to be head of the Saddam Martyrs Brigades during the 
invasion and was employed by the Iraq regime's office in Basra at the time. He 
and his family are thought to worked as spies for the Baath Party in Kuwait and 
to have received letters of acknowledgment from the Iraqi regime until it fell 
in 2001.

Letters obtained by Al-Watan Daily revealed that the individual provided the 
head of the Basra governorate's organizations supervisor the locations of 
Husainiyas, or Shiite mosques, in Kuwait and areas with Shiite majorities.

One such letter, dated September 1, 1990, contained mentioning of condolences 
from the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for the death of the suspect's brother 
during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. In the letters, the suspect referred to the 
invasion as "the liberation of governorate 19 from the pro-West Al-Sabah 
government.

In the letter, the suspect commits himself to continue supporting Saddam 
Husain. He even goes so far as to mention sacrificing his and his family's own 
lives for the former Iraqi leader and the Baath Party.

In another letter, the suspect mentions being honored by the former Iraqi 
regime for his role in assisting Iraqi troops during the invasion. - Al-Watan
