Gentlemen, Thank you for your replies regarding the playback speed on my Gentoo based AMD 64 3500. You were indeed right, the machine is capable of 25fps playback and I would like to send a special thank you to Andraz.
The un-masked libdv package version in Gentoo is 0.102. I un-masked the later version 0.104-r1, recompiled and I now get a full 25fps with only 27% CPU load. I have never seen Cinelerra run so fast, even with the compositor window open! It has also saved me a costly hardware upgrade!
