That seems good for live switching, where you do need a queued/next
shot, but for non-linear editing there isn't really a "next" shot is
there?  Just stop at the exact frame and switch the video source...

The right side looks rough, because I started with the traditional "A/B"
switch. I changed to a "queued" concept.

The idea is that the operator would choose the next source to switch to,
and would have the desired transition and transition length selected.
When the "Go" button is pushed, the transition is added.

The VCR "Rewind" and "Fast Forward"  buttons would go to the beginning
of the previous transition and forward to the next transition,
respectively.

The macro would simply make it easier to put in and tweak the transition
effects  and transparency keyframes.
