I don't think so...
First of all, the feature request is about the situation when one is doing
pre-editing in Viewer, i.e. trimming & cutting eg. captured material, removing
garbage etc., while "Separate files rendering" involves dealing with the
timeline.
Second, when I did some cut-only editing of my captured material, I produced
~50clips and carefully named the clips and annotated them with appropriate
comments.
However, selecting "Separate files rendering" option, will lose all these
metadata, and one will be left only with some basename + xx.ext name...
So, I believe that above workaround does not provide equivalent functionality,
but is just a 'workaround' while the original feature is not present.
