Here are the key network tools any network engineer shouldn't be without :)

Packet sniffing (ethereal, tcpdump)
terminal/console (v100)
ping
traceroute
arp
hping (ip spoofing, flooding to test your link or firewall and packet
manipulation "send custom ICMP, UDP and TCP packets")
nslookup
ssh (I don't like telnet anymore)
nmap (TCP/UDP port scanner)
gooooooooooooooooooooooooogle (www.google.com)
