I don't know if the service providers equipment is MEF certified, but MEF 16 / E-LMI might help here. Some Cisco equipment already supports E-LMI (ME3750, ME3400, 7600) and more will in the future. I know that the Nortel OM3500/OM6500 boxes which provide GbE over SDH services support at least 802.3ah.
