As Arie mentions, you are severely limited regarding routes. Running VRF Lite limits you to 2k routes all in all, so they're primarily useful in simple MPLS L3VPN setups. That said, we've used the 3550 with great success as CEs for several years in an eBGP / VRF Lite configuration, and they work like a charm. Being in an enterprise network, they only carry a few (<100) routes in each VRF. The eBGP is purely for when redundancy is needed, otherwise we use static routes from the PE. The 3550 went EoS in 2006. The 3560 is the natural successor, and has so far behaved equally well for us in this regard.
