Can't you just run PPP (without a modem) over the serial link?

That requires a non-trivial amount of compute power free on the PC.

Perhaps if you were using a software-driven modem or running an extremely high-speed serial (ie. T1) but he's using RS-232 and he's not using a modem. Even an old 386 can run a decent PPP link with VJ header compression on a 115kbaud serial link as long as it's got a decent UART. A lot of folks have done low-speed routing with Linux boxes that way years ago.
