Which is not a trivial matter when you start hitting the big numbers, i.e., 1Gbps, 10Gbps, e.t.c. Perhaps Ethernet's simplicity is what has made it cheaper as bandwidth has gone up. Maybe the simplicity is now starting to show as it becomes a viable alternative to SONET/SDH/WDM. Yes, link failure detection and other niceties are being/have been modeled into different applications (IP, MPLS, 802.<something>) that work on top of, alongside or within Ethernet. Whether that is enough is an exercise left to the reader. Cheers, Mark.
