That’s correct RFC3107 is probably now 13+ years old. However it has provided 
the foundation for Unified MPLS resulting in RFC3107 support on access devices. 
This architecture also pushed the innovation of BGP PIC, Remote LFA, Prefix 
Independent Convergence and now Segment Routing.

on rfc3107 ( bgp-lu ) , but I've yet to hear of anyone actually implementing
them .

Actually rfc3107 is really old and is usually used by folks who use Inter-AS 
MPLS Opt-C to keep/scale IGP per AS.
Lately it was somehow re-invented (introduced to larger audience) by RAN folks 
to scale IGPs when MPLS is used all the way throughout the RAN.
