you seek the /etc/rc* files, you're looking for a sysctl var to turn ip forwarding on.   This will enable the boxen to forward packets from one interface to the next based off a routing table..   You can also grab zebra (forget the URL, do a search on zebra, possibly with the word route with it), which can enable your UNIX box to run ospf, bgp, etc..which is useful for studying the protocols, you can set a few cheap unix machines up to run bgp, ospf, etc...   Richard A.
