We have tried FTP during different times of the day from different
desktops and servers...... These servers provide better throughput on other
point to point lines.
Well, we only suspect that our ISP could have done some traffic
shaping to limit FTP to a certain limit. But I am not too sure how they
could do it on a per session basis.. I know we can restrict traffic not to
peak beyond a certain limit for a given protocol, but if this alone is
done, then simultaneous File transfers would have hampered the throughput
of all the sessions. The throughput remains the same irrespective of the
number of sessions opened simultaneously........

FTP runs over TCP, that requires an acknoledge for n packets (window). On a
WAN environment, if you have plenty of BW, delay is going to be one of the
limiting factors. Other factors are: I/O on your PC, quality of the TCP/IP
stack (I have Win95 and we connect through a DS-3 to the Internet, but I
cannot get any faster than 130-150Kbps), etc.
If you try to do the same thing using Linux you might have a better result.
Win95 and NT 4.0 (not sure what releases) they have a bug on the TCP stack.
It doesn't negotiate/change the windows size properly. Did you ever noticed
that sometimes it's faster stop a download and start a new one? That's the
reason, if the tcp stack in Win95/NT worked properly, it should change the
window size on the "run", but it doesn't (sliding window).

Hello Friends,
We face a peculiar problem in our company.....We have a 512K access
speed to Internet. Our ISP is VSNL in India. When we do an FTP, we never
achieve a throughput greater than 100Kbps...Very funny thing here is we
peak to 512K on our local link to VSNL, if we initiate simultaneous FTPs.
But for all the FTP sessions, the maximum throughput achieved is only 80 to
100 Kbps.........
Is there anyway to restrict the throughput to a limit for a single
session in the internet cloud, which could be creating this problem for
us.....Can some expert throw some light on this please.........?
