PIM DM is useful when the senders and receivers are in close proximity,
there are only a few senders, high volume of multicast traffic, and there is
a constant stream of traffic.

PIM SM is useful for sparsely distributed receivers and limited bandwidth.
Sparse doesn't mean that there are few receivers, but that they are widely
dispersed. Flooding would unnecessarily waste bandwidth in this
configuration and could severely impact performance so sparse mode would be
the best option in this case. Sparse mode builds a tree structure as the
sender receives join requests.

All,

Would you please explain to me, the main reason why you would configure a
router using PIM sparse mode vs PIM dense mode.
Thank you
Cristina
