The router will segment the packet and assign a label to each segment. It
is important to note that SAR is handled at layer 2 for Ethernet. MPLS is
really simply a control plane, it doesn't handle functions such as SAR.

See The MPLS Resource Center at http://www.mplsrc.com/ for a wealth of MPLS
resources.

Subject: MPLS Basic

Hi everyone,

I was reading some basic Overview on MPLS and came accross some questions,
I wonder if somebody could explain this to me:

- assume that we have a router.
- On it, we have a ethernet interface enabled for MPLS
- Ethernet max transmission unit (MTU)is 1500
- A packet as big as the max MTU now needs to be sent through the ethernet
- A label is 4 bytes long

We cannot transmit more then the MTU over the ethernet ?
does MPLS provide fragmentation ??

Thanks in advance,

Regards

Z
