The OSPF terminology is confusing.

It would have been better to call the DR and BDR "designated
interface." You are correct thwt they are ideas for individual media.

"Internal," "Backbone," "Area Border," and "AS Border" are, loosely
speaking, attributes of "boxes". Since Cisco supports multiple OSPF
processes per physical box, the box could be an ABR in one process
and an ASBR in another. Indeed, a router can be both ABR and ASBR in
the same process.

If the router has...

1 or more interfaces in 1 nonzero area Internal
1 or more interfaces in area 0.0.0.0 only Backbone
1 or more in area 0.0.0.0 AND 1 or more in 1 or more
   nonzero areas ABR
Produces type 5 or 7 LSAs through
   redistribution under OSPF AND/OR
   default-information originate ASBR
