I didn't find the original post, but the general UNIX meaning of a 
daemon is a process that is not started by any terminal, but is 
associated with the OS.  Important daemons for UNIX networking 
include:

     inetd:  basic packet handling
     routed: RIP
     tcpwrapper:  access lists
     gated:  RIP, BGP, OSPF, ISIS
