A 5500 chassis is still a bit pricey. Don't look so much at the
platform as you do the supervisor module. The classic Catalyst
(non-IOS) switches more or less share the same supervisor modules.
An ancient 5000 likely has a Sup-I, mid-range 2926s have Sup-IIs, and
newer switches have Sup-IIIs or the gigabit supervisor. You can get
basic configs from an old 5000 Sup-I or 2900 (non-XL) Sup-II.
If you want to practice fancier stuff like MLS, NFFC, QoS, etc., you
may need a more expensive supervisor and even line cards (in the case of
QoS, yes, it goes down to the line card module for capabilities).
