I've seen some IOS versions (don't recall which but I think it was 12.1(5)Tsomething) where PPP would fail intermittently if you did NOT have authentication turned on. I just got into the habit of always using authentication whether it was absolutely necessary or not. If you don't have it turned on, try turning it on to see if that helps.
