I've seen some IOS versions (don't recall which but I think it was
12.1(5)Tsomething) where PPP would fail intermittently if you did NOT have
authentication turned on.   I just got into the habit of always using
authentication whether it was absolutely necessary or not.  If you don't
have it turned on, try turning it on to see if that helps.

Make sure that your PPP auth is set correctly (or not at all).  Also make
sure that you are not using AAA for network.  I found that when I added
this
the PPP would try and auth against it.
