Considering that your default route is probably pointing to a next-hop of the other side of the serial or perhaps is pointing to the serial interface itself, you would still need to tell the router to send traffic out of the BRI0 in the event that your serial goes down. If you serial interface goes down, it will take your current default route out of the routing table as well. So what you need to do is create a "floating" default static route which is nothing more than a default route with a higher preference so that it will only become active when the default route pointing to the serial is removed.
