Steve, I'm working on multicast design a new DoD network. At this level we are a pretty big network with OC192 pipes. At this level I rather not use any dense mode type of implementation with my multicast design if possible. Got too many other protocols to deal with already. I'm currently at Cisco in San Jose for testing and I think I remember something about a new Auto-RP that was suppose to get away from using the dense mode for the control plane ie. RP discovery and advertisement. I'll ask the lead multicast person here about it and will let you know.
Depending on how much load your LAN is taking I wouldn't worry about dense mode.
