David,

When I've had my T1's certified, tested, repaired etc. I made it a point to
be around when the diags were done to try and pick up on some of the
technology and troubleshooting from the technician's point of view. Per my
favorite Bell Atlantic (Now Verizon) techs, the terms HRU and HLU refer to
the HiGain units at the demarc or extended demarc of the install. (HRU -
HiGain Remote Unit / HLU - HiGain Local Unit)
In reference to Craig's answer, If you think they are blowing smoke, ask
them what something means if you don't understand. I have no problem acting
like a helper when they, or anyone else, comes around to work on my network,
it then allows me to ask questions and pry into their world without
threatening them. I can now perform most of the troubleshooting on the T1
lines (I have 16 of them) before I even call them in.
I learned two things when I got into this business... (1) The only stupid
question is one that doesn't get asked, and (2) The sooner you learn that
you don't (and can't) know everything, the better off you'll be.
I have worked with some wonderful people who have taught me lots, because I
deferred to their knowledge and learned everything I could from them.

My $ 0.02 +

Brad
