Well, persistance pays! :')  About 30 minutes after I sent this plea for
help, I found an article on CCO that gave me the info I needed.  The MGS
series routers used hardware based config registers.  There is a 50 pin
header on the processor card.  Setting bit 6 causes the NVRAM to be ignored.

Subject: MGS password recovery


Anyone want to jump into their "way-back" machine and help me figure out how
to perform password recovery on a MGS?  I have two of them with unknown
enable passwords.  I checked the password recovery section on CCO but the
don't list anything as old as a MGS.  I also searched the archives but did
not find an answer.

I will continue digging through CCO.   I am hoping to get two cheap but
functional routers for my home lab out of this effort.
