DCD - Data Carrier Detect
DSR - Data Set Ready
DTR - Data Terminal Ready
RTS - Request to Send
CTS - Clear To Send
 
These reflect the status of the connected CSU/DSU.  When say DCD is down, then most probably the line between the 2 CSU's is down.  This is the way these indications can help.
