At Networkers a Cisco CCIE always does a presentation that shows how a
router handles a packet, from classifying it as it comes in, to changing
the packet if necessary, to making a forwarding decision, and finally to
transmitting it.
The Networkers presentations are here:

Look for the one called, "Router Switching Performance Characteristics," by
Phillip Harris.
His presentation is pretty advanced. It's based on a simpler presentation
that used to just explain process-switching versus fast-switching, but over
the years the presentation has grown to include all the latest features,
such as CEF. But, despite the gory details in the presentation, it is still
excellent reading. If the gory details are too much, look for presentations
from pervious years when life was simpler.
Have fun!
