Ref:  chapter 8 of Intro to Cisco Router Configuration  
pages 229-230

It says responses to trace command include:
!H   The probe was rceived by the router, but not forwarded, usually due to an 
access list.
P    The protocol was unreachable
N    The network was unreachable
U    The port was unreachable
*    Timout
