Actually- a simple answer. It's the motherboard. You slide the
processor & interface cards into the backplane for power (some management),
& a transfer bus to the physical interface (be it Ethernet, Serial,
FDDI, etc., etc). I'm going to reach into controversy "probably," but it's
a layer 1 bus.
That's it, but you're right it sounds a little heady :-)
