That message really drove me nuts until I understood what it meant.

The system bootstrap is also known as the "boot image", "rxboot image",
"boot loader", or "boot helper". The system bootstrap is a subset of the
system IOS loaded on the router. The system bootstrap is used to perform
network booting, to load IOS images on the router, or as an interim image
that can be is used in the event the system image (full IOS version) on the
router becomes corrupt. You'll know you're running off the boot image
(mini-IOS) rather than the full system IOS if you see "(boot)" appended to
the hostname of your router. Nazri recently posted a message asking:

"what the (boot) means..i can't even show my routing table...i copied sh ver
o/p... "

When he typed "show version", the following information was displayed:

  KB(boot)>sh ver
  Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-BOOT-R), Version 11.0(10c), RELEASE
  SOFTWARE (fc1)
Copyright (c) 1986-1996 by cisco Systems, Inc.
Compiled Fri 27-Dec-96 17:33 by loreilly
  Image text-base: 0x01010000, data-base: 0x00001000

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c), SOFTWARE

As you can clearly see, the IOS in use was the bootstrap software and not
the system IOS image.

What the message "%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.1 may
not be correctly understood." is referring to is that the system bootstrap
image is older than the current IOS version (IOS 12.1). Configurations from
this version may not be correctly understood by the older mini-IOS version
loaded on the router. As is so important to know, prior to IOS 11.2, there
were significant changes with respect to how access-lists are implemented.
If the router is permitted to boot from the system bootstrap only, and let
run as a production router, the configuration files may not be correctly
understood by the system bootstrap; the router may not perform as expected.

Hope this helps clear up two threads at once.

Subject: 2509 start-up message!!

Hi there,

I have a Cisco 2509 Router set-up as Terminal Server. Every time it boots
up it displays the following message:

Copyright (c) 1986-1998 by cisco Systems
2500 processor with 14336 Kbytes of main memory

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 12.1 may not be correctly
under
stood.

Is the above line normal boot procedure, or is there a way I can stop this
message from appearing?

Any hints welcomed?

Best Rgds,
Ash
