Dyland,

The benefit is conservation of IP address space.  To address both ends of a
point to point connection requires a subnet of 255.255.255.252; which is
actually four addresses, wasting 50% for network and broadcast addresses.
If you have a lot of point to point connections like this you end up using a
lot of IP addresses.  The alternative is to use the IP address of another
interface on the router.

However, this practice can make troubleshooting more difficult.
