RSMs are used in the Catalyst 5000 series line. The
MSM is used in the Catalyst 6000 series line. The RSM
features a 400 Mb channel to the backplane. It is
based on the Cisco 7500 RSP2 and sports an optional
Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2) that accepts two
7200/7500 port adapters.

The MSM has 4 virtual gigabit-ethernet interfaces to
the backplane. It is based on the Catalyst 8510 with
four gigabit ethernet modules (hence slot two is
missing). Although it hides it well, it is primarily
an ATM-based platform. It switches approx. 6
Mpps@64bytes.
