For one, the loopback interface doesn't shutdown, (unlesss there is a router
reset) which increases the stability of a BGP session with it's neighbor.
Secondly, it makes for easy identification of the source of an route update,
allowing you to specify the IP address to use on the router's loopback
interface.
The update source command basically says that the router updates are
originating from a given router.
When using an eBGP session, make sure to use the ebgp-multihop command
config when configuring the neighbor relationship.
Guys and girls, please feel free to add anything I may have missed, or
correct anything that's wrong...

Subject: update source loopback 0 ?
Hello,
What is the reason for using the command UPDATE SOURCE LOOPBACK 0? I
read the explanation that says it specifies the interface to be used as
a source IP address of the BGP session with the neighbor. What does
this mean exactly? What does this do for me exactly?
neighbor 123.12.3.1 remote-as 1
neighbor 123.12.3.1 update-source loopback 0
neighbor 123.12.3.1 next-hop-self
neighbor 123.12.3.1 soft-reconfiguration inbound
What does this do to the neighbor 123.12.3.1's routing table if
anything?
Thank You,
Andre
