The show version output often will tell you, if you put all the info together. For
example the type of processor is listed, and sometimes the chassis but you are right
that there may be some ambiguity when it comes to the 7000/7200/7500 series. See
snippets from "sh ver" below for 2611 and 3662:

cisco 2611 (MPC860) processor (revision 0x203) with 26624K/6144K bytes of memory.

cisco c3660 (R527x) processor (revision B0) with 58368K/7168K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID JAB042081PH
