Today I was asked by the President of a client of mine, "Why are Cisco products so
EXPENSIVE". Then he went on about how the "other" router vendors are carving into
Cisco's market, but couldn't figure out how Cisco got such a large share of the
router/switch market etc, etc...

I was able to make the analogy of comparing the Cisco line to a swiss army knife and
the "others" as a switch blade, being highly focused on one "protocol and/or
application," and how Cisco usually is able to catch up to the "other" highly
centralized vendors, if not surpass, and still have all that other functionality that
comes within the IOS.

Then just to make my point completely clear, I telneted to one of the Cat5500's that I
will be upgrading software on, pointed to the computer screen and showed him the "678
DAYS OF UPTIME" that had accumulated. Just at that moment I could see that he had seen
the light! The moral of the story is you get what you pay for. And needless to say I
WILL BE GETTING SOME NEW CISCO TOYS IN THE 2001 FY.. :-)

PS.
I am in no way slamming any "other" vendors just wanted to comment on how reliable the
Cisco line has proven to be and that I have come to admire.
