Please check the archives.  I and others have written extensively on 
this topic, along with default routes and default network. While the 
four concepts, default gateway, gateway of last resort, default 
network, and default route, may sound alike, there are subtle (and 
not-so-subtle) differences among them.  A good explanation takes a 
couple of pages.

I'm not sure what you mean, though, by a non-Cisco explanation of 
"gateway of last resort."  That term is Cisco-specific.
