First of all, how much are you willing to fork out? There are lot's of
programs out there, commercialized or public domain. You can try WhatsUp
Gold v6.0 if you have a intermediate budget found at
http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WhatsUp/. Or if you are looking for a
full-blown NMS to monitor your Cisco gear, I recommend Aprisma SPECTRUM at
http://www.aprisma.com or other tools such as CiscoWorks 2000 or HPOV which
are the popular ones. But just for monitoring/logging ports, this would be a
bit overkill.

My 2 cents,

Subject: port monitoring software

I am in need of a software program that will monitor the ports on a Catalyst
5505 and log when ports go down and up etc...

If anyone has any information on this topic please let me know

Thanks,
