Check the distances at the URL below. These are the same specs that
enterasys uses.

62.5 micro gets 275 meters over SX and 550 over LX with the mode
conditioning patch cord.

1000Base-SX

Short-wave optics, allowing up to 260 meters over 62.5 micron multimode
fiber,
or up to 550 meters over 50 micron multimode fiber in a full duplex,
switch-to-switch connection

1000Base-LX

Long-wave optics, allowing up to 440 meters over 62.5 micron multimode
fiber,
up to 550 meters over 50 micron multimode fiber, or up to 10 kilometers over
10 micron single mode fiber in a full duplex, switch-to-switch connection

Yes, you can get MM fiber to work with the LX interfaces. To do so requires
a mode conditioning patch cable. Basically it is a fiber patch that is
single mode on the transmit and multimode on the receive. The single mode
is spliced into a multimode strand after about 6 to 12 inches. This is
standard in the gigabit arena. Here is a URL.
