John, You can recover from a catastrophic failure by reloading via the serial port using Xmodem or Zmodem (I think). I've done this before - it's painful - but you can recover. I'm not sure if this is what is required - but if your router is brain dead and can't tftp - this this is your only choice. It happened to me with a 3620 - took about 2hrs. before I was completely back up.
