Traceroute is simply a special ping with Time To Live (TTL) set beginning at
1. The first router that recieves the packet will expire TTL and send an
ICMP error back to the transmitting router. The transmitting router is
expecting this error and will log the IP address of the router sending the
error. The transmitting router will then set TTL to 2 on the next "ping"
and wait for that ICMP error to return. This continues until the "Target"
of the trace replies.
