In the Cisco docs regarding spanning tree and the states, one of the things
that happens during all spanning tree states is that the switch:
"Receives and responds to network management messages."

Does anyone know what this means?

For example: the diagram on page 6 of
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/sw_5_5/cnfg_gd/s
pantree.pdf

Shows PDUs and Network management frames going in and out of a switched
port.

Thanks.
