In my mind speed is the clocking of the medium and bandwidth is the
payload you can get accross said medium.  For example you could set up
an 45M ATM circuit and shape so that only 3M of bandwidth is used but
that 3M if data is still clocking at 45M.  Ethernet is 10M but you'll
never get 10M acrros an ethernet so your bandwidth is optimally around
7M
