The answer to your question is "yes".

It is possible to use the aux port, you will still need a roll-over cable
and will have to use the same setting in hyper terminal for it to work.

But remember, by default all the router/switch start-up messages are send to
the console port, unless these messages are bufferred and directed to a
syslog server and logging to the console is turned off.

If you are connecting to the aux port, you will not see the startup messages.

Normally aux port is used for remote dial-ins, by having a analoge modem
connected to the aux port.
