I always think of it as the Router's notebook. All the possible routes are
scribbled in to the topology table so that it can calculate the routes which
will actually go in to the routing table. ie the one(s) with the lowest
distance (or which fit within the range if variance is used).

Tricky to visualise the reason for this one.  I'll have a go at explaining.
The advertised distance is the distance from the next hop router to the
destination, whereas the feasible distance is the distance from this router
(ie including the distance from this router to the next hop).
So...If the advertised distance is greater than the feasible distance of the
current successor (not allowed), the chances are that this route that is
being advertised is actually back through you and via the current successor.
I've got to admit I'm rusty - been pushing too many pens lately, so more
than happy for someone to step in and correct if necessary.
